Kids and Screens with Erin Walsh: The Science Behind Technology Use in Early Childhood

9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Saturday, October 8 9:00 – 11:00 am Register here. This class is hosted by both Shepherd of the Valley and Easter Lutheran Church. Location of the class is at Shepherd of the Valley in Apple Valley. The youngest among us are no strangers to digital technology. One-third of children under three years of age go online daily and 28% of children under two have televisions in their bedrooms. Families are getting conflicting advice about the impact of these technologies – on one hand companies promise that media can boost their children’s intelligence while on the other America’s pediatricians urge parents to limit screen time in the early years. In this workshop, Erin explores the latest research on the power and impact of screen time in early childhood and shares the ingredients that young children need to thrive in a world dominated by screens. Using stories and warm humor, she helps parents or professionals identify ways to use technology and media to support children’s learning and development. Your co-hosts for this event, Shepherd of the Valley and Easter Lutheran, believe that the important work of raising kids is a calling from God. We partner with parents and other caregivers by providing opportunities to learn and form life-giving connections with others through a community of faith. Erin Walsh is a parent, speaker, educator, and writer. She has worked with communities across the country who want to better understand child and adolescent development and cut through conflicting information about kids and technology. Erin and her father, Dr. David Walsh, started together at the National Institute on Media and the Family before creating Spark & Stitch Institute in 2019. Her signature down-to-earth approach and sense of humor helps families and educators engage in complicated topics and leave feeling capable and motivated. She has consulted with schools, school districts, parent groups, and other youth serving organizations throughout North America on issues related to digital media, parenting, and social emotional development. Register for the event here.

Big Shoe Ranch Ministries First Annual Fundraiser

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Big Shoe Ranch Ministries is a Christian based ministry created to offer a peaceful place of refuge as well as a place where a soul can heal through the connection and life lessons given to us by one of God's most beautiful creations- the horse! So much of the time a broken life or broken heart is sadly overlooked because it is not so easily identified as broken or in need of healing. Our heart is to provide a peaceful sancutary using the ranch, our volunteer staff, and our horses where a soul can be quieted, healed if needed, and restored to the joy God always intended for our life's journey. Our vision for BSRM is to provide a safe-haven for our children where they can step out of life's pressures and encounter the healing power of God, gain or regain their joy, and experience the amazing healing power of one of God's most powerful animals - the horse- AKA our "Team of Angels" (FB provides a little "snippet" on us and our TEAM) - BigShoeRanchMinistries. Each session includes inspiring conversations from some of our inspiring texts we provide as well as organic conversation about life's journey's, and of course time with the horses. Our hope is to leave a legacy of the love of God, compassion, friendships, and faith along the way. We will be raising money for the ongoing ministry for our kids and horses!
