Read John 19:1–16
When we think of a crown, we might picture a headpiece adorned with precious stones atop the head of royalty. However, that is far from the crown placed on Jesus. While under trial by Pontius Pilate, mockers placed a crown of thorns on His head. They taunted Him, yelling “King of the Jews,” and begged Pontius Pilate to have Jesus put to death instead of another prisoner—a
genuinely guilty man named Barabbas. Jesus, who had done nothing wrong, replaced Barabbas. Jesus not only took the place of Barabbas the day the crown of thorns was placed on His head, but He also took our place. Jesus, the perfect King, took the crown of thorns upon Himself.
Prayer:
God, thank You for sending Your Son to take my place. Help me to honor this sacrifice with my words and actions.
