Isabella Baumfree was born a slave in upstate New York, and even though she was due her freedom in 1827, her owner was planning on keeping her enslaved, so she escaped.
While she was in hiding, God showed her a vision, with the suddenness of a flash of lightning, she saw that God was in every part of the universe.
At that moment she knew that Jesus loved her.
So she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and traveled the country, fighting for women’s rights, abolition, and telling anyone who would listen about the Savior that could truly set them free.
In one of her most famous sermons she said:
If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again!
There were some who didn’t like that message, one time someone threatened to burn the building she was going to preach in.
She simply walked in the front door with her head held high and said “then I will speak to the ashes”
May we have that same boldness today.
