Over the course of his more than 40 years in the music industry, Michael W. Smith has been no stranger to success.  With his new recording of “Waymaker”, he has found his back way towards the top of the Christian Music charts again.  He and I chatted recently to talk about what it means to him to have a song like this playing on the radio.

As a young artist, you get caught up in it… I was prideful, and I was wondering how many records I sold, and did my song go #1, and I just hate that I was that way.  But you’re young and you’re immature and you’re growing in the faith.  As you get older and as you grow in the faith, you learn that it’s not about you… I think it frees you up to go, you know what God, just tell me what to do and I’ll go do it… and whatever that is, I’ll do it for your glory and not worry about what people think.

When I brought up how Waymaker is heading towards #1 right now, Michael brought up gratitude first.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a #1, but if it goes #1 that great and if it doesn’t go #1, I will not lose any sleep over it.  I’m just grateful.  It’s not going to make me any happier if I get a #1, it’s just not.  But I am grateful… At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if it goes #1.  I don’t think God really cares, honestly, on some level.
