It’s a really tough decision as a parent: When do you let your kids have a phone, and how do you monitor it? Well, one thing you should absolutely do is let them know that not all apps are ok for them to have on their phones. One police department has a list of 15 to watch out for.

But there will always be new apps and ways for teens to sneak things past us. So the two basic rules law enforcement suggests you share with your kids are:

1. Once a picture or video leaves your phone and is sent to someone else, it is out of your control.

2. Someone can use that picture or video against you.
