We live in a world where time is at a premium. All around us – speedy cars, quick meetings and fast food. I have a friend that times out each day – accounting for almost every minute in an effort for expediency and efficiency. When one task is done, he moves quickly to the next leaving little to no downtime. It’s to this end that golfer Walter Hagen may have coined his infamous reminder, “Remember to stop and smell the roses.”

I remember at the birth of my first child my dad pulling me aside to say, “Son, enjoy every moment; she’ll grow up fast.” At the time, I smiled and thought, “Sure, Dad, sure.” Eight years later, I’m wondering where the time has gone. I’m just 10 years away from seeing her walk across the stage and throw her cap in the air.

So, how can we combat the pressure of moving at the world’s pace? I would offer two things: 1. Don’t let To Do lists and challenges consume you. Control what’s in your control … and the rest, as your Frozen-loving daughter could tell you, “Let it go.” Matthew 6:34 says, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” And 2. Simply stop … physically, emotionally and spiritually, and in that moment, key into what the Psalmist wrote in 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Life moves at a break-neck speed … but we aren’t called to live by the world’s standards. So, go ahead … be still and stop and smell the roses.
