It can be so easy to become overwhelmed by the devastation of natural disasters.   Even if you weren’t directly affected by Hurricane Florence, it’s all you see on TV and social media.  And I think it is normal to also feel helpless.  Thankfully, there are some simple things you can do right now to make a difference:

I know it may feel cliche, but instead of just posting “thoughts and prayers” on social media and then just leaving it at that (like I often do!), there is incredible power even in a simple cry out to God.  Even when we don’t know what to say, the bible says:

God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans.  (Romans 8:26-27 MSG)

You can pray at Prayerworks anytime

Even though the disaster happened far from the Twin Cities, there will be some opportunities to volunteer in your own community to make a difference globally.  Look for events to show up on the KTIS community calendar, and check with local charities to see what they are doing.

Here are some organizations that will be on the ground to make sure people have their basic needs covered:

The Salvation Army

God’s Pit Crew – crisis response team

Convoy of Hope

Samaritan’s Purse

The final thing you can do is trust God, knowing that when you feel like you can’t do anything else, that is just the beginning of what He can and is going to do!
