Do you have stress in your marriage around how to manage your finances?

If so, Chuck Bentley, CEO of Crown Financial Ministries says you’re not alone. In fact, he says that financial issues are the leading cause of marital strife and divorce. He also says that you are entirely capable of making sure money doesn’t tear your marriage apart.

Chuck says it’s important to bring peace to your marriage before you even attempt to address financial concerns. He shares the importance of committing to becoming a peacemaker in your marriage.

“The word ‘peacemaker’ is a verb. It’s not simply hoping there’s peace in your marriage, family, or home. Many times, I hear couples say they are longing or even praying for peace, but the Lord said ‘blessed are the peacemakers,’ meaning they take action, they go and they are the ones that bring peace about.”

According to Chuck, most division occurs in a marriage and family when there are hurt feelings.

“You can’t avoid it. In our marriage, it happened a lot. We’re all vulnerable and we’re all capable of hurting each other. The closer you are, the more likely you are to be hurt by the person.”

While hurt is inevitable, Chuck says it’s imperative that both spouses commit to being peacemakers.

“I like to say if one of you in the marriage is a peacemaker, then you’re going to survive. But, if both of you will become a peacemaker, then you’ll start to thrive because you’ll get rid of all that friction.”

Chuck and his wife Anne have put some systems in place to prevent friction from being perpetuated in their marriage.

“For instance, we don’t go to bed angry. Scripture says, ‘don’t let the sun go down on your anger.’ If one of us is angry, we stay up to talk about that problem and get it resolved.”

When we are committed to becoming peacemakers in our homes and our marriages, Chuck says it eliminates Satan’s ability to divide and conquer us.
