I do not like doing laundry. There. I said it. But, I’ve found the best way to keep up with it is to follow through, wash, dry, fold and put away…except for the socks! Recently I got down to the bottom of my big green laundry basket AGAIN, and there they were. About six inches of random, unmatched socks! All colors of the rainbow, men’s dress socks, my socks, gym socks and footies. There was quite a collection of kids socks, too, illustrating the various ages and stages of the kids who have been through my house. There were many lonely socks that I could not assign to anyone I knew, but there they were. Still living in the bottom of my green laundry basket. Then, I did the math. I can’t believe I’m telling you this but I’ve been hauling around that menagerie of unmatched socks for at least TEN YEARS!
In one decisive moment, I went to the big garbage can in the garage and DUMPED THE BASKET! Yes, I did grab a few good ones for dusting, but there they went to wherever the single socks go. Maybe they’re united with their match. I hope so because I couldn’t do it…or find them. In that one swift moment I felt a weight lifted off me that I think equals losing ten pounds, or quitting smoking, or letting go of a big grudge, or forgiving someone.
Isn’t that just like God? Like many things that hinder you in life, I was hauling around all those socks that gave me anxiety every time I got to the bottom of that basket. Now when I start to worry about something, get bugged by someone or start letting the little things pile up I just remember to #DumptheBasket and the feeling I had when I really did it!
Here’s a great verse to dump your basket to; Philippians 4:6-7, “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”(MSG)
If you want to have some fun today and free up your life, #DumptheBasket of stuff that’s holding onto you!
